Meaning
A craftsman who shaped wood, bone, ivory or metal on a lathe.
Description
Turners operated foot-powered or later mechanically driven lathes to produce circular and cylindrical objects including chair legs, tool handles, bobbins, toys and decorative items. The trade required good hand-eye coordination and skill in selecting appropriate materials. Wood turners were found throughout the country while specialist turners worked with bone, ivory and metal for specific industries. The trade overlapped with that of the bodger in woodland areas. Many turners were employed in furniture-making centres such as High Wycombe.
