Plasterer

Meaning

A craftsman who applied plaster to walls and ceilings to produce smooth finished surfaces.

Description

Plasterers applied coats of lime plaster or later gypsum plaster to interior walls and ceilings to produce flat smooth surfaces ready for painting or wallpapering. Skilled plasterers also produced decorative plasterwork including cornices, ceiling roses and ornamental mouldings. The trade required physical strength for the rough coats and great precision for finishing and decorative work. Plasterers worked on new buildings and on the repair and renovation of existing ones. The Victorian era produced a great demand for both plain and decorative plasterwork in the new housing and public buildings of the period.
