Marbler

Meaning

A craftsman who worked with marble, or a person who created decorative marbled patterns on paper or book edges.

Description

The term marbler covers two distinct trades. A stone marbler cut, polished and worked marble for use in fireplaces, floors, monuments and decorative features in buildings. This required skill with cutting tools and polishing compounds to bring out the natural patterns of the stone. A paper marbler created decorative swirled patterns on paper by floating pigments on a size and laying paper onto the surface. Marbled paper was widely used as endpapers in bookbinding and for covering boxes and stationery. Both trades required an eye for pattern and colour and considerable technical skill.
