Hatter

Meaning

A maker or seller of hats, particularly felt hats.

Description

Hatters made and sold hats of all kinds, but the trade was particularly associated with the production of felt hats made from animal fur. The felting process involved treating the fur with mercury nitrate to make it mat more easily, and long exposure to mercury fumes caused neurological damage — the origin of the phrase mad as a hatter. The hat trade was concentrated in towns such as Stockport, Denton and Luton. Many hatters worked as outworkers finishing hat bodies produced in factories. The trade was disrupted by changing fashions and the introduction of machinery.
