Meaning
A dealer in iron goods, hardware and metal tools.
Description
Ironmongers sold a wide range of metal goods including tools, nails, hinges, locks, chains, wire and household hardware. They supplied farmers, tradesmen and householders with the metal goods essential to everyday life and work. Many ironmongers also stocked paint, oil, rope and other general hardware. The ironmonger's shop was a central feature of every market town. Some ironmongers also manufactured goods themselves while others were purely retail traders. The trade required knowledge of a vast range of products and their uses.
