Glazier

Meaning

A craftsman who cut and fitted glass in windows and other structures.

Description

Glaziers cut sheet glass to size and fitted it into lead cames or wooden frames to glaze windows in houses, churches and other buildings. The trade required skill with a diamond glass cutter and knowledge of how to work with lead and putty. Glaziers also repaired broken windows and installed decorative stained glass. The Victorian era saw a great expansion in glazing as plate glass became cheaper and larger windows became fashionable. Many glaziers also worked as painters and decorators.
