Glover

Meaning

A craftsman who made gloves from leather or fabric.

Description

Glovers cut and stitched leather, kid or fabric to produce gloves for everyday wear, work and ceremonial occasions. The trade was concentrated in towns such as Woodstock, Worcester and Yeovil where the necessary skills and leather supplies were available. Fine leather gloves were a luxury item and an important fashion accessory in the 17th and 18th centuries. Many glovers worked at home as outworkers for larger manufacturers. The trade faced increasing competition from cheaper imported goods in the 19th century.
