Description
Almoners were employed by monasteries, hospitals, noble households and later by workhouses to manage the distribution of food, clothing and money to those in need. The role required a degree of trustworthiness and literacy. In later centuries the title was adopted by hospitals where almoners assessed patients' financial circumstances and arranged support. The role eventually evolved into what we now know as medical social work.
